I have chosen to analyse The opening scene to Swordfish because it used a lot of shallow focus, and i would like to include shallow focus on the final edit of my thriller opening.
The opening scene is of a speech by Travolta and it is only the subject in focus everything else is blurry. This makes it so that the audience is only focused on Travolta therefore making what he is doing and saying even more powerful and effective.
This scene also uses colour correction to correspond to the mood of the scene, so the scene is made to have alot of brown murky tones which reflects the darkness of the conversation. I would like to replicate this technique in our thriller opening by draining colour from the following scene to make the scene feel dark and unpleasant.
The sound of this clip other than the sound of travolta's voice there is very subtle music, this is effective in the way that it draws even more attention to what he is saying. This technique would be ideal in the phone call scene of our thriller.

Thriller Opening Progress Report
Thriller Opening Progress Report.
We have now filmed the flashback part of our film but still need to do the present day.
We have realized that doing it in 2 different times in the day has made it a bit harder, as we cannot get all the footage in one day.
When filming we did several shots of the same scene so we had a variety of angles and shot types to choose from.

We are making progress with the editing of the footage we have already, and so far we have had no problems with the footage and we are all happy with what we have.
We had a lot of clips from when the filming was done and so we had to separate the footage we wanted and the footage that was not needed, this took some time combing through all the footage to make sure we didn't leave anything out and put in anything we didn't need.

Student example - opening analysis
AS Media Thriller opening - Analysis
Inner Evil - Kristine Gulden
Plot
The plot is quite vague and confusing, This may be the intention of the creator to mislead the audience. There are a lot of possibilities for the many questions to be answered in the rest of the film.
Mis-en-scene
Light clothing has been used for the innocent character and the opposite, dark clothing, has been used for the mysterious or dangerous character. This makes it very easy to distinguish who is good and who is bad.
The locations are all ordinary locations, this makes the contrast between the event and the location even more noticeable
Editing
The sequence is fairly slow paced, this draws out the tension, allowing it to build up a lot.
The colour correction used in the sequence draws out colour and makes the scene seem almost surreal and sort of a dream world kind of feel.
Sound
The music is constant through out the opening until the last bit when the sinister twist is revealed.
The music at the start is a calm but slightly eerie and then when the twist is revealed it turns to a darker tone with deeper sounds
Camera + Lighting
Most of the lighting is natural lighting as it is set in the day time but the producers did use shadow to point out the bad scenes.
The majority of shots are either tracking shots or close ups, this is very effective because it means that the audience only see a small part making them want to see more and feel like there is something that they are missing

Final Idea Class Feedback
Pro's
- Good use of connections
- can be "Pured Off" in 2 minutes
- narrative idea is very good
- the conventions used are very well incorporated in the film
- the idea of the ring shot and the key hole idea is very effective
- good use of flashbacks
Con's
- the night filming could be difficult
- the keyhole scream could become horror
Suggestions
- don't change much
- maybe instead of night filming just editing
