7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the main task?
Planning
in our preliminary task we were very unorganized in what we were going to do and when we did go to achieve something we would often not know what to do as we didn't have anything scripted, we lacked some of the equipment we sometimes didn't even have all members of our group there. So when making our main task product we made sure to script any of the dialogue first and we organized set dates in which we would film certain parts to our thriller so that we had all the relevant members and equipment present during the filming stages, also we used story boarding with our main task which help us to keep on track of what need to be done and set out the different stages we needed to complete.
Filming
Actual filming in our preliminary task was often shaky and sometimes out of focus we fixed this by using a tripod and spending the extra time to set up the shot before filming in our main task. also with filming in our preliminary task we only took the single shot we wanted and maybe one extra for some of the shots. However, this left us extremely limited in what we could do for continuity and such for our outcome so with our main task for each shot we took a minimum of three shots at different angles, focal depths, positions, and lengths this enabled us to 'fine tune' our product to have the desired effect on the audience.
Editing
One of the main problems with editing in our Preliminary task was that is was just too simple and didn't flow as well, this was mainly down to the choice of editing software, we used iMovie for our Prelim task and this proved to be easy to use but very simplistic and customizing individual elements was very difficult at times, so when making our main task we used final cut express, this software is much more advanced and enabled us to have a much higher quality outcome because we could adjust colour to match with each shot and also to make the audience feel a particular way and also all the cuts, fades and transitions are done manually so everything was made to fit rather than being a generic thing.
Progression
Overall the progression from preliminary task to the main task is quite large: the quality of the clips used in the film are higher as they're steadier and better focused; the editing is much smoother and the lighting in the clips is more continuous; the narrative was design rather than thought up on the spot; the dialogue was crafted for a specific effect rather than just rabble. All of this made for a better product with a more professional finish.
