Bob Meanza-Cicada Interview

http://designingsound.org/2013/09/cicadas-sound-installation/

The link above is to an interview with the sound Artist Bob Meanza, talking about one of his pieces 'Cicadas'.
“Cicadas” is an installation with a difference. Bringing together sound design, technology and natural science, Berlin-based sound artist Bob Meanza has created sonic robots which emulate some of the resonance and timbral qualities of the cicada."
I decided to look at this piece because the way he used the 'Robots' to create the different sounds, interested me. The sound the 'Robots' made were determined by their own physical shape.
What i really liked about it was the contrast between the very naturalistic sounds at the start and the electronic/robotic noises in the middle of the piece.
The interview explained how he achieved the electronic noises with the robots, this was his explanation of how the robots worked:
"The physical structure is always following a fixed order: battery, controller, emitter. The battery provides the electricity, the controller generates the signal, which is fed directly to the emitter. I chose a different sound synthesis and settings for every Cicada: there’s a very simple PWM synth, an impulse-wave synth, and a very weird mathematical synth that work with esoteric formulas that are not really related to sound, but in some way do their job. Then there’s the emitter part: different relays sound different, piezos have distinctive sounds too, and so on. The concept was: keep it as bare-bones as possible. But still, I had to experiment a lot assembling these elements together, till the little frankenstein prototypes started sounding like insects."

Progress update

Now:
-Our group have now started editing the footage that we recorded over the two days we have done recording
-We are currently working on writing the music for us to use in our opening
-I am currently working on the title scene of our thriller

Editing - we have added colour correction and put a few shots into sequence
Music -  Me and Joe have looked at what music to use and we are using a piano and acoustic guitar possibly in different scales to make it creepy
Titles - We are  thinking of either having birds transform into the word bird, all silhouette. or Have the title incorporated into the first few shots by having the text on the wall of our first shot for example

Planning:
-We are planing to record the music next week
-We plan to write at least a draft script next lesson
-Sort another filming dat to get majority of the remaining filming done

The Sound and Music of The Dark Knight Rises - Hans Zimmer & Richard King

This video shows the difficulties and struggles that people in the sound industry have, but it was also very interesting to have an insight into the process that they have to go through to create theses sounds.
The part that interested me the most was the layering of many sounds to create the sound of the BatMobile. We are going to be layering sounds within our own production and so it has given me a bit of inspiration for my own.

Target Audience

Our main tagret audience is 'The Young Hopefuls'

This ranges from 15-29 year olds, and is aimed at both sexes. The young hopefuls will be on low incomes and will be high television and radio consumers. they will have many devices that they will be able to watch media on. The target audience will love the sense of danger and love the adrenaline that it brings. Peripheral audiences will be the friends of our main target audience, which has either been suggested to watch or shown the film to. We will hopefully appeal to the target audience by replicating the type of life they live in and putting a sense of danger and excitement into it.
